Great shrimp. Great Fish and Chips. Great Whiskey Sour. Great friendly service. We just happened upon this place and were pleasantly surprised.

Nice local restaurant. Bar atmosphere but really nice and breezy as the back opens like a garage door. Seafood/bar menu (burgers tacos sandwiches, and a few seafood based entrees) fair priced ($10-15 per option). The food I ordered was not so great... I got a fried green tomato sandwich that was burnt on the outside and there wasn't enough inside to fill the bread :( ... My husband got catfish which was good. The service was bad partially bc she wasn't paying attention as the band was getting set up. I asked for no cheese on the salad (which came out with cheese) then my husband requested no coleslaw (which was on his plate) when we asked about the slaw she said "there's not much so it's okay"

Love this place. Some of the best music in town and Ronnie has one of the most amazing voices. A lot of older people hanging out and having fun dancing. My wife and I love going in to finish off our night and enjoy the crowd. Always fun to shag to some good beach music. Food is surprisingly decent, at least the few things we have ordered. Great people. Great music. Close to our home. Great recommendation for a low key hole in the wall place with award winning music.

Delicious and great service. I would give 5 stars but I try to reserve those for a specialty or fine dining restaurant. So this is really 4/4 stars for it's category - fun, casual seafood in a bar setting. We got the shrimp basket grilled with two different sauces. For a "bar" I figured the salad wouldn't be that good but it was so good we had two. Shrimp were a solid size. Flavor great. Service great. Atmosphere unique. Definitely a recommend. And if you get Spencer, you'll be in good hands.

Know that this is a very casual bar serving food. Live music 6 nights a week, and loud! We sat in the deck out back so it wouldn't be so loud, but everyone was smoking - cigs and cigars. Shrimp was good, but the basket of 10 shrimp was $15.99, which seems high to me. I might come back to drink beer and listen to loud music, but not to eat. Also server was friendly and bubbly, but food was slow (they weren't that busy) and she never came back to refill drinks. :-(

This restaurant is a real family experience. When you walk in, you won't hear the chants of "Norm", but rest assured, someone will know your name. At least four nights a week, there is live music on stage. Can't make it to the bar because it is a blistering 42 degrees out...that is ok, you can go on their website and log into the Shack Cam with live feeds all around the world. Who offers that in Charleston? No one that I can recall. What about the kids? How about mini golf right outside. Parents you don't even have to worry about their safety because you can watch them from the deck. There is a happy hour for the betweeners, two flat screens for your football and basketball needs. Oh yes, the staff is so friendly. You may even get invited home for dinner after. Prices are fantastically reasonable as well. Check out Buddy Roes soon.

We finally tried Buddy Roe's this past weekend after driving past it for the last few months when we visited Sullivan's Island or IOP; and about all I have to say is that we should have tried it sooner. It was the last night of restaurant week and Buddy's had a 3 for $20 deal going on so we thought we'd give them a try. I knew I was going to like this place when I walked in the door; I wasn't sure about the food. You see Buddy Roe's is set up to more like a bar which is the first thing you notice when walking in the door; a huge bar with tables in the same room and a stage for live music to the right side of the bar. They also have an outside deck with some tables and a bar out there as well. We were greeted right away by Caroline the bartender who told us we were welcome to sit anywhere we'd like; so we decided why not just pull up a stool at the bar and let her take care of us. She did a fantastic job pouring our drinks from their fully stocked bar, explaining some of their menu items, taking our our order, and keeping us happy throughout dinner. Well we weren't really hungry and decided to split the restaurant week deal which ended up being a lot of food. For starters we had the Fried Green Tomatoes, which were lightly breaded and drizzled with ranch. Next our main entree was the Seafood Combo that included flounder filet, shrimp, slaw, hush puppies, and a loaded baked potato. For dessert we had the cookies and ice cream; two warm chocolate chip cookies with vanilla bean ice cream. As I said earlier, we were a little hesitant about food in such a bar like atmosphere; but the food here was fresh and it was great. We will certainly return to Buddy Roe's again; perhaps for some live music next time. You can't go wrong with this place; they have some great food, cold drinks, live music, and even a putt putt golf course out front.

My family and I stopped at the Shrimp Shack on a Saturday about 7:00 pm. It was busy, but mostly was a bar crowd. The place is a bit of a hole in the wall, and appeared to be more of a local dive than anything. It should be noted we have a 16 month old, who was approaching his bed time. We ordered our food, and waited, and waited, and waited. The waitress told us several times our food would be ready any minute. During the hour we waited, the waitress never offered to refill our drinks or to get us anything while we were waiting. By this point, our toddler was starting to lose it. I offered to pay for the soft drinks, but the waitress said not to worry about it, so we left without every getting to eat. Should be noted the table next to us had problems with the service as well. One lady in their party was never served until after all the others were done eating. I won't be back, I would recommend passing this place up. Would give zero stars if possible.

We went there for our wow (women of wando). There were five of us. We all ordered something different. The service was good. Our waiter was very friendly and nice. The food was good. I had a fiesta salad. Later on they started playing music. Which by the way was very good.

I came to SC for vacation last week, and on our last night (of restaurant week to boot), we stopped in for dinner. Was looking for a local dive instead of the standard tourist trap-- and local was exactly what we got! Delicious food for the price-- per waitress suggestion, the catbites were outstanding; ended up ordering a second basket! The fried green tomatoes were scrumptious too. Had the breaded catfish (again) with some shrimp. I loved how the breading was very lightly coated, not saturated like some restaurants do where you can barely guess what fish is fried in between the breading. The new chef (of only a few months) even brought out the individual dishes in person as she was done preparing them. Live music was also an added touch. Wish we would've found this joint earlier in the week and not the last night! Would definitely go back. Great bang for your buck.

I have been wanting to try this place for years and finally did. Food was GREAT. Prices I thought were a little high but the shrimp tacos was delicious. Shrimp were huge and we split the two tacos. Also ordered a basket of fried shrimp. Light on the breading which we loved. Our server was super nice and personable. We will definitely be back next year!

Stopped at BR'son our way back home. We just left the beach and felt like it wouldn't be a problem to be mostly cleaned up. It's set up as more of a bar atmosphere than I thought, but there were no problems with bringing the kids. In fact, when we left another family entered. The food was pretty good. We purchased, the Catfish Dinner Big Plate, a meal that was two fish fillets, a side and hushpuppies. The waitress forgot to bring the hushpuppies and then only brought 4, which were burned. It was $10.99 for the plate but it just seems that 2 burned, late hushpuppies just wasn't proper. I did enjoy the music. It was nice to enjoy before heading back on the road. I had my daughter place a tip in the singer's jar. He didn't acknowledge her which I thought was odd. Even odder when I realized he was the owner. All those things said, I'd say it was ok. We probably won't stop their again and try another restaurant the next time.

Stopped here for lunch because we were hungry and it was the first place we saw. Nice outdoor seating area, but patrons are allowed to smoke on the patio. There's an area for live music. Decor is dingy but I can't classify it as a dive. Fried shrimp was just OK and tasted like the oil hadn't been changed in weeks. Partner had fried green tomato BLT and said it was just meh. Next time I'm in the area will eat somewhere else.

I have never had worst service in my life. Portions are small, and we waited about an hour and a half for food while the table next to us waited only 15 minutes. We had 6 separate checks, and after they processed our cards we found out that they automatically took tip. They told us that they count 5 and more people as a big group and automatically charged everyone in the group 18% gratuity. Honestly, don't listen to any good reviews. Any food is not worth terrible service. I'm not even sure what ticked them off, we only started to complain about an hour into waiting for our food. The owner wasn't there, and the only waiter told us we would have to come back later to talk to him. No one took responsibility or even cared. The bartender and waiter even complained about us customers right in front of us as we waited for our money back! One of the people in our group paid cash and had to remind the waiter to get change back. It was absolutely terrible. Don't EVER come here!!!!! They will steal your money!

Food was decent but not worth the price. Waiter was slow and we had to ask for refills, silverware, and napkins. He never asked if we needed anything. We had to ask for everything and even then it was a 50/50 chance of getting it. Took 20 minutes to get water, about an hour for the food. And there was hardly anyone there. Didn't seem like anyone there cared. Don't waste your time or money.

A HUGE thank you to the management and staff (and to the festive local crowd that added to the fun atmosphere) for being such great hosts for my girlfriend's birthday last weekend. Our servers, Caroline & Lindsey, took care of our 20+ party wonderfully. Everyone in our group enjoyed their food, from the burgers to the fish tacos. We found Buddy Roe's to be one of the few places in town that could handle our large group, without having to put down a deposit and without any hassle. They even stored the birthday cake we brought in their cooler for the evening, and helped slice and serve when it was cake time. For a laid-back vibe, friendly hospitality, and good food, I highly recommend Buddy Roe's.

While visiting Charleston, we were looking for a local place to eat delicious seafood. We spotted Shrimp Shack and made a turn to come back. It was the worst decision we made on that day. We could have paid more for the same meal for more price just a few minutes drive down in French Quarter Downtown but I am 100% sure that we would have gotten a BETTER service as well. That being said, upon entering the shack, the hostess looked like she has never seen Asian people. Then, our waitress took a long time (I have had my shares of waiting tables) to take our order. She then forgot my drink until I had to remind her and her reaction was, 'oh yeah'. I saw her running back and forth to the bar, kitchen and the back deck. Even if she is overworked, under staffed, there is no excuse to treat paying customers like we're such inconveniences. Especially, the out of town customers who yelps!. Way to make an impression Caroline. (No Pun indeed) The menu selection is a variety of seafood. We did not get any recommendations or suggestions. Even at such a nice laid back restaurant, I felt uneasy and uncomfortable. I did not even remember to order the 'Soft Shell Crab Special' that was advertised outside on the chalk board. What a shame!! Shrimp basket itself was decent. I tried the lemon pepper flavor. 6 oz of succulent Shrimps overpowered by pepper...just as the nice shack ruined by inhospitableness of the waitstaff.

My husband & I wanted to like this place alot as we had heard so much about it. We ordered the fish and shrimp tacos. Also the ceviche for an appetizer. Every food item was just plain average. That particular evening (6 pm) we arrived, the place wasn't overly busy but it seems our waitress had to serve customers inside as well as out on the deck. A group of loud mouthed drunken women began their display of slurred speech conversation while we were eating. They began at the front bar and worked their way to the side bar, yelling & carrying on. She was some kind of nasty. No one in management bothered to quiet them down, they kept serving them the alcohol. I guess they tittered home on their bikes as several of their bikes were laying all over the entrance area when we left.

If you enjoy a fun evening with drinks and music, you must go to Buddy Roe's -- they have great food also. Ronnie & Kim Johnson have done a fabulous job decorating the place, they are both outstanding musicians and they have great food -- Do you like fried shrimp - they have the best. Do you like fried sweet potatoes? there's are awesome!!!!!! Like to dance? This is your place. It is not a rough house -- it is just a lot of clean fun. Liz Loadholt

What a great dive bar. Eclectic mix of people. Overlooks a decrepit mini golf course. The singer played guitar and banjo - what more could you ask for?

I hesitated, give a place 3-stars on one visit or not? Here's the first impression, deferring to the other reviews for more details on the menu. The good stuff: - the setting, plenty of nature to look at out back - the layout, great bar atmosphere, plenty of places to sit or hang and the best part is the outdoor patio with its own bar. When they open the two large garage doors in the back of the place, the outside comes in. Excellent. - the stage, although we were too early for the music, it had a great location, feel and setup - drink selection was very good The not-so-good stuff - the food: I ordered the ceviche, advertised on the sign out front, and assured by the waitress that it would make a meal (along with the homemade chips). It was not in the appetizer section, but in the lunch/dinner section. It was a normal ceviche serving, a little less than a cup, no where near enough to make a meal ( yelp.com/biz_photos/Occ1… ). This was why I'd asked. It was accompanied by chips that were greasy but not bad. They were necessary given the portion size. The homemade chips were thick(er) and just alright. The wife's shrimp burger was tasty and could be a recommendation. The preparation was not as good as could be, with the patty coming out more as a ball. Mashing it out a bit made for a decent sandwich. - service was interesting...could have been a bad day for our waitress, but she was very detached. She checked in on occasion, but I felt that she wasn't trying very hard. All-in-all, I'm going to go back. I believe the other menu items hold promise, especially the shrimp (all preparations). And as Steven P. said, the miniature golf is still there (I'd done that place 10 years ago) and you can watch as people are honing their skills.

Liked the flavor of the shrimp dish but the shrimp size was a bit to be desired. The many shrimp dip flavors were great, especially the Burbon flavor. The kids meals were reasonably priced. All in all it was a good eating experience.

We were there on an evening when the chief cook failed to show up. Resulted in bad service, to say the least. Owner was very apologetic, and most folks (other than that night) are very satisfied w/ food and service. We just happened to show up on an off night. Can happen at any restaurant. The sincerity of the owner's apology meant a lot.
